Monica Essenmacher: I am thankful to have met Bob Grefe through our mutual interest in birds many years ago. His calm and genial manner is something that really drew me to him.
It was always a pleasure when Bob showed up at the Port Crescent Hawk Watch site near Port Austin. And, because of who he was, Bob was kind and caring enough to come to Port Austin with Ann to attend a memorial for my mother. That is an enduring memory.
Finally, I remember a chat we had at a SVAS meeting many years ago where he pointed out a young man in attendance; he told me a bit about how great this kid was. His fondness and admiration for the boy, David Peters, was very much in evidence. And so it was that I made Dave's acquaintance. Because of Bob, I have another most admirable birding friend.
With much respect and admiration for Bob, I offer my sincere sympathies to all who mourn his passing. He touched more people than you will know.
