Mrs. Donna R. Schallhorn Saginaw Twp., Michigan A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Donna Ruth (Reichard) Schallhorn was called home to her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at the age of 83. Donna was born on June 22, 1938, growing up in Hemlock before raising her family in Saginaw Twp. She married Warren Richard Schallhorn on April 28, 1962, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hemlock. Donna was a talented pianist and baker who was utterly devoted to her family, friends, and church. She had resolute faith, rarely complained, and possessed an exceptional ability to see the good in people always. Donna expressed her love for others through baking, something she learned from her own mother. She was known for her breads, cinnamon rolls, and roster of cookies and pies. Later in life, she took on a neighborhood paper route, meticulously learning where each customer preferred their paper placed. But the papers were rarely delivered without some sort of pastry as well. Donna’s other passion was church where she was quick to volunteer herself (and her husband) for whatever task was needed. She played in the bell choir at Peace Lutheran Church and piano at Hemlock United Methodist. On any given day, visitors to the Schallhorn home could expect to hear a beautiful piano rendition of a favorite hymn — often from memory — and would be certain never to leave hungry or empty-handed. While Donna was known for her incomparable kindness, she was also tenacious. She started off as a secretary at an insurance agency right after high school but eventually trained to become an agent, working her way up within the company. And when her mentor Don Johnson retired, she took over the company which ultimately became Schallhorn Insurance Agency. Donna, who had a love for the color purple, was happiest when her whole family was together — whether playing ball in the backyard, eating chicken dinner at Zehnder’s in Frankenmuth, or sitting on the porch of the Windermere Hotel on Mackinac Island. Donna is preceded in death by her husband, Warren, as well as her father, Herman Reichard; mother, Caroline Rueger; siblings, Edward Reichard, Maynard Reichard, and Duke Reichard; and May Johnson, a dear family friend. She is survived by her beloved children, John (wife Nancy) Schallhorn and Timothy Schallhorn. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Emily, Talen, Jada, and Liam. Donna’s funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. with visitation at 12 p.m. at Hemlock United Methodist Church (406 West Saginaw St., Hemlock, Michigan) on Sunday, August 29, 2021, with the Reverand Robert Richards officiating. Donna’s committal service will ensue at Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery, Saginaw Twp. Memorial contributions may be given to Hemlock United Methodist Church or Peace Lutheran Church in her honor.
