Mr. Douglas G. Cook

Cook, Mr. Douglas G., of Saginaw, Michigan, passed away Friday, July 13, 2012, at the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center with his family at his side. Age 92 years. Doug was born on January 6, 1920, in Franklin, GA to the late Ernest and Sammy (Jones) Cook. He moved to Michigan in the early 40’s to work, during which time he met the love of his life, Dorothy Niederquell, whom he married on July 25, 1947, in Frankin, GA. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. She survives him. Doug served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Prior to his retirement, he was employed at General Motors, Draper Chevrolet, Saginaw, and then finished his career as Service Manager at Hagen Ford, Bay City. He was a member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church on Brockway, and the American Legion. Throughout his retirement years, he enjoyed gardening, Tiger baseball, Pistons basketball, and spending time with his great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Doug was a very special, kind-hearted and generous person to everyone he met, especially to his family, helping many of them throughout his life. Surviving besides his wife, Dorothy, are four sisters and two brothers, Ethel McClain, Darnell Cook, Nova Jo (Raymond) Wilkinson, Linda Ann Wood, Mitchell Cook, and Martha Jane Garrett; sisters-in-law, Justine Cook, Emma Martin, Lorraine Yates, and Carol Niederquell; many special nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly, especially his great-niece, Danielle Premo, who gave loving care to Doug. He was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers, Jessie Minnick, Carness Collier, Euckle Arnold, Gene Cook, and Bobby Cook. The family wishes to express their thanks to the Palliative Care Unit staff at the VA Medical Center for the exemplary care they gave him. Funeral service will take place 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 4705 Brockway. The Rev. Daniel P. Garbow will officiate with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, where Military Honor Guard will be conducted under the auspices of the American Legion Post 439. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the Wakeman Funeral Home, Inc., 1218 N. Michigan Ave., on Monday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., then at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to St. John’s Lutheran Church or to the Aleda E.
