Melba E. Jones

Melba E. Jones Saginaw Michigan Melba passed away on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Symphony Tri-Cities, Bay City Michigan. She was 100 years young. Melba E. (Guy) Jones was born on November 6, 1924, in Rapid City, Michigan, in her Grandmother’s home, to the late Ray A. Guy and Leone M. (LaCure) Guy. Melba was a graduate of Arthur Hill High School. She was married to Richard I. Jones on July 19, 1941, in Ohio, and he predeceased her on March 14, 1998. Prior to her retirement, Melba was employed by the City of Saginaw as an accounting clerk in the water department for 28 years. Melba was a member of Saginaw First Church-Nazarene for 90 years. She was a devout woman who lived to serve the Lord. She was very involved with her church as a board member, Sunday school teacher, head of her prayer group and would work side by side in the kitchen with her sister Helen for all of the special events. Melba had many talents and spent her free time quilting, crocheting, knitting, crafting, cooking, baking, canning, crossword puzzles, reading and taking care of her youngest son until his death in 2024. She quilted and donated over 250 lap quilts to the local VA hospital (Veterans were an important cause to her). She would make baby blankets for The Old Town Baby Pantry and knitted hats and mittens for donation to Old Town ministries. She loved Family gatherings and hosted many holiday dinners at her home over the decades. She played many instruments in her lifetime, the Piano, organ, Violin and banjo, Gospel music was her genre. She always stayed busy. She was blessed with good health and a sharp mind. Surviving are siblings, brother, Donald Guy of Livonia, Michigan; sister, Irma Underhill of Kentucky; daughter, Sandra Bondell of Phoenix, Arizona; 8 grandchildren, Terri Bondell, Matthew (Laura) Bondell, Thomas (Sherry) Trier, Todd (Leslie) Jones, Amy (Patrick) Hughes, Michael (Nicole) Jones, Christine (Steve) Hoppas and Greg Jones; 14 great grandchildren, Miranda (Carlie) Monticelli-Richards, Madison Bondell, Morgan Bondell, Tony (Shupei) Trier, McKenna Jones, Sean Hughes, Nicholas Hughes, James Hughes, Conner Jones, Owen Jones, Lily Jones, Shelby Jones, Clayton Jones, Oliver Jones; one great great granddaughter, Rayne Elizabeth Richards; daughter-in-law, Mary Jones; many cousins, nieces and nephews. Melba is predeceased by her husband, Richard I. Jones; sons, Richard I. Jones Jr., James E. Jones, Timothy D. Jones; sisters, Sue Manchester, Shirley Manwell, Patsy Stockwell, and recently Helen Younk. Special thanks goes to Symphony Tri-Cities staff, Transitions Hospice staff and Mandalin Gray for providing excellent end of life companionship and care. The Celebration of Melba’s Life will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at First Church of the Nazarene, 3000 Davenport Ave., Saginaw, MI. Pastor John Obrecht will officiate. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the Wakeman Funeral Home, Inc., 1218 N. Michigan Ave., Saginaw, MI, on Friday, January 10, 2025, from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m., then at the church on Saturday, from 10:00 am until the time of service. Melba will then be laid to rest, next to her husband, in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Saginaw, MI. Those wishing to express their sympathies are asked to consider First Church of the Nazarene.
